Founded in 1975 by the visionary brothers Pandit Laxman Rao Kewale and Pandit Gangadhar Rao Kewale, the International Music Centre (Ashram) stands as a beacon for Indian classical music in the heart of Varanasi. Nestled amidst the city's ancient lanes, this heritage building has been a sanctuary for musicians from around the world for over four decades.
Dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich tapestry of Indian classical music, the ashram offers comprehensive training in instruments like the tabla, bansuri, sitar, and sarangi, as well as vocal and dance forms. With a legacy of nurturing over thousands of musicians, the center has played a pivotal role in carrying the soul of Indian music to global audiences. From its humble beginnings as a local music school, the International Music Centre Ashram has evolved into a vibrant international hub. Musicians from Europe, Japan, the USA, Australia, Korea, and Latin America have found a home here, learning the intricacies of Indian classical music and sharing their own musical traditions.
Testimonials
It was an incredible experience attending the Sunday morning raga show. Dr. Sandeep and Dr. Shanish are world class musicians who share their craft with great joy and beauty. It was a small/intimate setting and we were served a small breakfast with chai. I highly recommend a visit here.
Fantastic music, people, vibe. They organized a private music performance for us one night as our trip did not overlap with their weekly concerts. The music was powerful and hypnotic. We felt privileged and learned a lot with their friendly explanations. Highly recommended.
