Harmonium Classes at the Music Centre
Unlock the expressive power of the harmonium with our comprehensive classes, designed to guide you through the unique techniques and styles of this versatile instrument. The harmonium, also known as a “reed organ” or “pump organ,” is a unique and versatile keyboard instrument that combines elements of both organ and accordion mechanics. Originating in Europe and later adapted in India, the harmonium has become a fundamental part of Indian classical, devotional, and folk music. It produces sound by pushing air through reeds—thin strips of metal tuned to specific pitches, which vibrate to create musical notes when air passes over them. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced musician, our harmonium classes provide the foundation and skills needed to master this timeless instrument.
How the Harmonium Works
The harmonium consists of a small keyboard and a set of bellows, typically located at the back or side, which the player pumps to push air through the instrument. Each key on the keyboard is connected to a reed tuned to a particular note. Pressing a key opens a valve that allows air to pass over the corresponding reed, producing a note. By controlling the pressure on the bellows and varying the speed and strength of pumping, the player can influence the volume and sustain of each note, creating expressive dynamics.
